This is Adam Bede country and anyone in pursuit of literary connections can spend many happy hours here exploring this part of ‘Loamshire’. George Eliot used Staffordshire as the basis for her mythical county and her one-time village home provided a great deal of background for her famous novel. It was largely based on local people and places. The author’s grandfather’s 17th century cottage, and appropriately called ‘Adam Bede’s’ Cottage, still stands and contains carvings dated 1619.
