Diamond Jubilee Celebrations at Tutbury Castle
Sunday 3rd June 2012 - Tuesday 5th June 2012
Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire has been selected to be an official beacon site as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations that will sweep the nation during the first week in June.
The lighting of the beacon at the castle will be synchronised with other official beacons forming a diamond necklace across the UK in celebration of the 60th. anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen. The Beacon will be lit on Monday 4th June as darkness falls.
Tutbury Castle is owned by the Duchy of Lancaster and forms part of the forest of Needwood Estate. Her Majesty has visited the Castle on three occasions as have other Kings and Queens across almost one thousand years of history.
The Castle will also be welcoming students from Paget School in Branston, to take part and form part of the entertainment for visitors who are coming to the castle to join in the fun for the three day event starting at 11am on Sunday 3rd June and closing on the evening of Tuesday 5th June.
The theme will be “At the Court of Elizabeth”, celebrating the lives and achievements of Queen Elizabeth 1st and Queen Elizabeth II . Visitors will be able to meet some of the great characters of the 16th century such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth 1st. plus singers, dancers in full costume and listen to some wonderful live music from the 16th century.
The Great Hall will be open and a number of students from Paget School will show their acting, poetry and drawing skills . As an unusual exercise the mathematics department at the school will give castle visitors get a chance to see how the ruined chapel would have looked by using mathematics to rebuild it on paper from what we can observe today.
Face painting and lots of other children’s activities such a knight’s school will no doubt prove great fun for budding Lancelots. Hot and cold food will be available all day and into evening on the Monday as will a bar with some of the best local beers – of course.
The best news for visitors is that all three days and evening event over the Jubilee will be FREE ENTRY to ensure even the families on tightest budgets will not miss out.
